Hi, I have just found this website. I am trying to find out some information about an ancestor of mine who was a tug boat Captain on the Thames. I was wondering were I might find a register of Captains/hands from the late 1800's to mid 1900's. The unusual thing is that I am told he had a full gun carriage funeral when he died! The answer as to where the register is might be obvious....but I am new to this kind of thing!! Any help would be gratefully received. Thanks.

Hi, I have just discovered this interesting site - well done to everyone for collating such a fabulous part of our history. Can anybody help me to fill some gaps about Joseph Watson - Waterman & Lighterman from the early 1920's. He was my grandfather and I am trying to put together some facts and memorabilia for my sons. I know the tinyness amount - can you tell me more?

I know he went out to meet the hospital ships from Dunkirk.

He was president of The Tugmens Guild.

He Skippered the first Hovercraft on the Thames in the 60's ( I have a certificate as a passenger)

He skippered the Marchoness

He worked for Catermaran Cruises

A barge was named after him.

A boat was named after him for the Dogget & Badge race

My motehr was made a freeman of the river whe Joe died.

Apparently he is mentioned in a book?

A song/ballard was written about him?

He died in 1978

Sorry this is a long shot but thank you in advance

Very best wishes

Susan

Very interesting site, my father was great friends with Billy and Ma Fisher, he was a waterman, won the Doggets Coat and Badge before the First War, married a Countess ( I believe), ran some tugs and lighters from Greenwich and lived, in his retirement at any rate, in an eccentric household at Belmont Hill. I've searched diligently for information on Billy Fisher, but I've found nothing. My late mother had a cutting from, I believe, Womens Weekly about Ma Fisher but that's been lost over the years. Any information I'd be grateful to receive!

My great-grandfather was Tom Burley, engineer of Watkins' Hibernia. I believe he died in 1947. My mother has a copy of Frank Bowen's "A Hundred Years of Towage" inscribed by "John S Watkins to Engineer T Burley". She has press cuttings from when Hibernia was scrapped in 1961 and a copy of an article on Hibernia in "Model Engineer" 29 June 1961. She also has some old photos of Captain Wood of Hibernia, and (I think) of Sam Perry, my great-uncle, who was fireman of Watkins' Simla. If I can scan them (they are stuck into an old album) I will send them to you for your website.

Great site Tug,

Very interesting site, lots of names that i have been told stories about!

I worked at Felixstowe for Howard Smith, Adsteam and Felixarc. All great fun and gave me great pleasure! I was on the Sun London for two years around the coast, she was a fine tug!

I now work in Kazakhstan as Engineering Superintendent for BUE Kazakh Ltd, have 43 tugs, barges and ice breakers under my control, all good fun!

Maybe some of the readers will remember working with my father Tony Gennings............. Still tugging and going strong in his 49th year afloat!

Cheers.

Darren Gennings.
